Rowling End House and The Mouse House can be booked together for all the family, sleeping up to 10 people.
Wainwright saw Newland's greatest blessing as the undisturbed peace, a freedom from mass tourism and commercialisation, the valley continues to enjoy a way of life that in essence has not altered. Rowling End itself was a working farm until the 1950s and the land in front of the house provides sheltered pasture for sheep and cattle from neighbouring farms.
Whilst secluded, Rowling End is at the heart of the Northern Lakes within easy distance whether on foot, bicycle or car from Borrowdale, Derwentwater, Keswick and Buttermere. For walkers the great joy of Rowling End is the ability to walk from the house, whether you are looking for a full days hiking across the tops of the mountains (Wainwrights the Newlands Round or the Coledale Round) or a gentle stroll around the valley or down to the Lake (Half an hours walk from where you can get a ferry around the lake or across to Keswick).
For all those new to walking in the Lakes climbing Catbells, which is directly opposite is a must - the views are magnificent, on a clear day you can see the Solway Firth. Catbells is the perfect introduction to fell walking.
The land in front of Rowling End through which Newlands Beck flows, belongs to Rowling End. Although much of the land is quite marshy it is a haven for wildlife including buzzard and deer. You are welcome to walk the fields at your own risk but please be mindful of any livestock and leave the wildlife undisturbed. The public footpath across the valley runs across the driveway to the side of the main house down to a bridge across the stream and up the other side, turn left along the lane for 20 m before the path continues on your right across the fields and up to the foot of Catbells.
